Understanding Depression

Depression is generally associated with a loss that needs to be more fully grieved and processed. It can also be a consequence of feelings of anger turned inward, such as regret and blame. Practically all of us have experienced a loss of some kind, perhaps in the form of a thwarted goal or a dream. If left unprocessed, feelings of depression often emerge and are compounded by other life problems. Often people come to therapy with only a surface-level understanding of their depression. With thoughtful discussion, attention, and validation, the underlying causes can resurface and be identified. This allows for the opportunity to tend to the actual root cause of depression, and finally work through what may have been buried for a long time.
